Black Friday marketing and festive season checklist for SA businesses

A week-by-week plan for Johannesburg and South African businesses, covering your offer, Google Ads, website, WhatsApp, Instagram and Google Business Profile before 27 November.

Black Friday marketing in South Africa works best if you start now. Black Friday is on 27 November 2026, so choose your offer this week, fix your website and checkout by mid-November, load your Google Ads by 22 November, warm up WhatsApp and Instagram, then carry the momentum into December with updated trading hours.

This checklist is for small and medium businesses in Johannesburg and across South Africa, from a Randburg salon to a Sandton consultancy or a Roodepoort online store. It comes from what we see running Google Ads, websites and social media for local businesses: the ones who struggle in November are usually the ones who only start in the last week.

Key takeaways

  • Black Friday is Friday 27 November 2026 and Cyber Monday is 30 November. Neither is a public holiday.
  • Pick one clear offer, and check the margin before you promise a discount.
  • Fix your landing page and test your checkout on a phone before you spend on ads.
  • Only send WhatsApp, SMS and email marketing to people POPIA allows you to contact.
  • Most festive revenue falls outside the Black Friday weekend, so plan for all of December.

How does Black Friday work in South Africa?

Black Friday is one day on paper, but big retailers treat it as a month. Takealot's 2026 specials run from 26 October to 23 November, with exclusive deals on the main day from midnight on 27 November. You won't outspend them, so don't try to.

Interest builds early. Ubersuggest estimates searches for "black friday south africa" jumped from about 880 in September 2025 to 4,400 in October and 12,100 in November, so shoppers are looking well before the day.

Here is what the latest full season, Black Friday 2025, showed:

  • Baskets: Payfast's average basket rose to R1,274 from R1,120 in 2024, while PayJustNow's was R1,629 (The Citizen).
  • Timing: PayInc's busiest online hour was 10am to 11am, with other peaks from midnight to 2am and late in the evening (Moonstone).
  • Online share: this varies by provider. Online was 45% of card spend among Discovery Bank clients, 56% on PayJustNow and 14% at Standard Bank, so don't plan around a single number.
  • The bigger picture: the Ecentric index, covering 1 November to 24 December 2025, put Black Friday to Cyber Monday at 10.6% of online holiday revenue. Roughly nine rand in every ten in that data came outside those days.

When should you start your Black Friday marketing?

Start this week. Use this countdown, and if you're short on time, put the offer, the checkout and the ads first.

How do you choose an offer that still makes money?

Work out your margin before you pick a discount. Take a R1,274 order at a 30% gross margin: you make about R382. Give 20% off and the price drops to R1,019, your profit falls to about R127, and you need three times as many orders to earn the same.

That's why the Ecentric report recommends bundles, tiered discounts and buy-more-save-more offers over blanket price cuts. Service businesses have other options too, such as a bonus add-on, a free audit, or a voucher for January.

Keep your pricing honest. The National Consumer Commission has warned suppliers that misleading ads and false claims about a previous price can fall foul of the Consumer Protection Act, so never raise a price just to discount it.

How do you promote Black Friday on Google Ads?

Decide what a sale can cost you before you set a budget. In the example above, paying more than R127 in ads to win a discounted order loses money. Our guide to how much Google Ads costs in South Africa explains how to set a monthly figure.

  • Concentrate your spend. Put more budget behind 27 to 30 November and less on the quiet days around it.
  • Add a promotion asset. Google lists Black Friday and Cyber Monday as occasions, and you can set your own start and end dates.
  • Be careful with seasonality adjustments. Google says they suit short events of one to seven days, and only when you expect a major jump in conversion rate.
  • Send clicks to the offer page, not your homepage, and bid on your own brand name.

If you'd rather not run this yourself, our Google Ads management team can set it up.

Is your website ready for Black Friday traffic?

Your ads can only sell what your website can deliver, so check these before 15 November:

  • One offer page with the deal, the end date and a single clear button.
  • Fast loading on mobile data, and a checkout that works on a phone from start to finish.
  • A live test payment through PayFast, Yoco or Ozow, including card and instant EFT.
  • Delivery costs and cut-off dates shown before checkout.
  • Your WhatsApp button working, because some buyers will have a question first.

Payment options matter. Peach Payments reported Apple Pay rand value up 549% and Buy Now Pay Later up 753% on its platform in 2025, so check which of these your provider offers.

If your store needs work, there's still time for fixes. Elly Kabuika wrote in her Google review: "I had an excellent experience working with Ready4BusinessOnline on the creation of my online store." See our web design service or our guide to what a website costs in South Africa.

How do you use WhatsApp and Instagram without spamming people?

Know the POPIA rules first. You may market electronically to people who opted in, or to existing customers whose details you got in a sale, about similar products, with a free way to opt out in every message. For anyone else you may only ask for consent once, and that first message can't be a sales pitch.

Section 69 names SMS and email, and the Information Regulator's guidance adds direct messages on platforms such as Instagram. WhatsApp isn't named, so treat it the same way. This is general information, not legal advice.

  • WhatsApp: invite opted-in customers to an early-access list and send them the offer a day ahead.
  • Instagram: post a teaser carousel, use a countdown sticker in Stories, and ask people to DM a keyword for the deal.
  • Facebook: pin the offer post to your Page and answer comments the same day.

What should you update on your Google Business Profile?

Set special hours for 27 November and for the festive dates, including 16, 24, 25, 26 and 31 December and 1 January. This matters if you rely on walk-ins or calls from around Fourways, Midrand or wherever you trade.

Google says to confirm holiday hours even if they match your normal hours. Special hours cover closures of up to six days in a row, so if you close for seven days or more, mark the business as temporarily closed. Add a post with your offer and its end date too.

How do you keep selling after Cyber Monday?

Don't switch off on 1 December. Change your ads and posts to a festive message, follow up with buyers about gift vouchers and repeat orders, and publish your delivery cut-off dates once your courier confirms them.

Then plan for January. A New Year booking offer gives service businesses something to sell while others are closed. See how the pieces fit together on our services page.

Frequently asked questions

When is Black Friday 2026 in South Africa?

Black Friday is on Friday 27 November 2026 and Cyber Monday is on Monday 30 November 2026. Neither is a public holiday in South Africa, so normal trading rules apply. Many retailers start their specials weeks earlier.

How long does Black Friday last in South Africa?

Officially it is one day, but many retailers stretch it across November. Takealot's 2026 specials run from 26 October to 23 November before the main day on 27 November. For a small business, a short window of four days from Friday to Cyber Monday usually creates more urgency.

How do you promote Black Friday as a small business?

Pick one clear offer, build one page for it, and test your checkout on a phone. Then run Google Ads to that page, share teasers on Instagram and Facebook, message opted-in customers on WhatsApp, and update your Google Business Profile hours.

How much should you spend on Black Friday ads?

There is no fixed figure, and Google has no set minimum. Work back from your profit per sale. If a discounted order leaves you R127 before advertising, you need to win that sale for less than R127, then set a budget for the orders you can actually fulfil.

Is Black Friday just a marketing strategy?

Largely, yes. It is a retail promotion rather than a holiday, and you don't have to join in. If your margins are thin, offer a bundle, a bonus or an early-booking deal instead of a discount, or skip it and focus on your festive trading.
